Research

This is research on a few of the biggest magazine companies. I did this so I could pick an appropriate company the would cater to my magazine genre and to see what type of genre of music magazine is the best selling so I could get some ideas for a genre for my own magazine.

I am new to Media and I was not aware of all the different features of magazines so I decided it would be a good idea for me to find out what all of them were. I took note so I knew what their purposes were and also so I could include everything that a normal magazine would have on the front cover.

I made the decision to analyse this cover as it is a good example that shows off what magazine covers are like for dark, punk bands like slipknot. 

I chose this cover as the image has some special effects which is not always common on music magazines. There is also more than one subect on the cover. I also chose it as the image lay out links directly to the article instead of just being about the band featured so I could see how  I could do a link between the cover and article.

 

As we have to include a contents page I decided to analyse one so I know what to include on mine and what type of text to put in, how many images to put in and how much on next weeks issues should be put in.

I analysed this double page spread as I noticed it in a magazine I was reading and through it was very interesting as it had all the features I outlined in the annotations.

I chose this as I may create an album cover to advertise on the front cover so by doing this I know what type of thing album covers include if I made one to go on my front cover.

Questionnaire...

I conducted a questionnaire to find out what people now-a-days look for when they buy music magazines. I picked some people at random who all read music magazines to ask some questions in order to make my magazine as accurate as I can to what people want.

 From this I can see that a large percentage of people who read music magazines are male. We can also see that the largest age range is 16-25 year olds so that means if I want to make my magazine accurate to an age selling point I should make it suitable for teenagers. Although from my research you can see that it is more boys than girls I noticed there is such a small different I am going to make it suited for both male and females, this would also allow my magazine to make more money as it has a wider target audience. However this is also suited for a female audience as well as girls often aspire to be like female singers so although I will mainly target it for boys it would also be suited for girls.

These answers show that the most popular genre of music and the one I should do my magazine on is pop as it is the one that most people who answered my survey liked. This means that I will use a pop band for my main subject for my own magazine.

As we have a double page spread to fill up with articles I think I will use the two most popular sections which I can see from this questionnaire are interviews and the subjects personal life. When asking the boys what parts they preferred they said they usually skim through the magazine and only look at an article on their favourite artist and look at the hottests songs.



From this I can see that most people would be willing to pay around £1.10-£2 and the second £2.10-£3 for a magazine so when I create mine I will probably sell it for around £1.50-£2.50 as it is around the limit and it is in the range but not too expensive so it would make the most money possible.
